A Demographic and Social Profile of Quebec City’s Irish Population, 1842-1861

Abstract |
As the Irish Catholic population in mid-nineteenth century Quebec City increased, the Irish Protestant population decreased. The author points out that a depressed economy and job competition caused some Irish Protestants to leave the city, and some married (“disappeared”) into the Irish Catholic population. However, other reasons that the author believes the Irish Protestants left the city were due to a lack of social and benevolent support networks and to a perceived threat to their safety because of increased Catholic militancy in the Catholic majority provincial capital.
