Educational and Social Adjustment of Francophone and Anglophone Khoja Ismailis in Montreal
Abstract
A comparison of the educational and social adjustments of the Anglophone and Francophone Khoja Ismaili communities in Montreal. The Anglophone community consists of Ugandan Khoja Ismailis who came to Montreal following their 1972 expulsion from Uganda, as well as those from Kenya and Tanzania who immigrated as a result of political insecurities in those countries. The Francophones came from Zaire, Rwanda and the Island Republic of Malagasy. The author interviewed twenty-five Anglophone and fifteen Francophone full-time post-secondary students in Montreal. Both groups demonstrated a high level of social adjustment, though the Francophone students were more socially adjusted. The author attributes this slight differentiation to the fact that the Anglophone Khoja Ismailis came from a racially compartmentalized milieu of East Africa, while the Francophones had gone to racially mixed schools and lived in a socially mixed environment before their emigration.
