Abstract |
The author examines the cultural landscape of Montreal in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as interpreted from the material and visual culture of bridge construction. The three bridges under her study are the Victoria Bridge (constructed 1854-1860 by the Grand Trunk Railway), the Saint-Laurent Bridge (constructed 1886-1887 by the Canadian Pacific Railway), and the Jacques Cartier Bridge (constructed 1926-1930 by the Montreal Harbour Commission) that cross over the St. Lawrence River at Montreal. The author points out that at the time they were built, all were regarded as essential for the development of the city and country. Each was the most technically advanced of its kind and brought new material and construction methods to Montreal and Canada. The author’s study exposes the spatial, temporal, and ecological characteristics of bridge construction in an exceptional cultural landscape along the St. Lawrence River during the period 1854-1930.
