| Abstract |
The study of exhibitions, the first manifestations of museums in Lower Canada, reveals a considerable disparity between the respective tastes within the populations in Quebec City and Montreal. Quebec City had a larger proportion of English-speaking residents than did Montreal during the first half of the nineteenth century, and showed a marked preference for art, while a rapidly industrializing Montreal, with a large working-class population, preferred exhibitions of “curiosities”.
