Dictionnaire historique du Plateau Mont-Royal
|
Abstract |
A 603-entries dictionary (with 450 illustrations, maps and photos) of this multi-cultural, multilingual neighbourhood in the east-end of Montreal. Originally a vast countryside with orchards, pastures and stone quarries, Plateau Mont-Royal was developed between 1890 and 1940. Its heart, Boulevard Saint-Laurent, also known as the Main, was the city's immigration corridor where cultures and languages met and lived: Francophones and Anglophones, Irish, Jews, Italians, Greeks, and Portuguese. The dictionary has entries on families, communities and religions, social and political struggles, businesses and industries, the arts, and toponomy and architecture that helped shape the identity of the Plateau over time. The book put a lie to the myth that Anglophones did not live in the east-end of Montreal.
