Title
An Old Time Rival of McGill
Abstract
The author traces the history of the Montreal-based Canada Baptist College, whose origins date from 1835 when John Gilmore began the instruction of theological students in the city. The college was established in 1838. The author compares the Canada Baptist College and the original Faculty of Arts building at McGill University, which was built five years later. When the Baptist College opened, it had two students, McGill had three. The new Baptist College building, built in 1845, was "rather larger than the original Arts Building of McGill." Both contained residence for students and staff, as well as classrooms and a library.
