Lachute, Or How Barron Lake Got Its Name
|
Abstract |
The author describes the settlement of Lachute, first by rapacious Americans who did little farming but cut most of the surrounding old-growth forest to sell as potash. By 1810 most of the Americans had left, replaced by Lowland Scottish farmers who had been encouraged by Thomas Barron (1794-1864) to immigrate to the Lachute. Barron had settled in Lachute in 1809. He is best remembered for his opposition to the Patriotes before and during the Rebellion of 1837.
