Abstract |
The Irish-born John Crawford (1814-1903), businessman and hunting enthusiast, immigrated to Quebec in 1829. He eventually became the Vice-President of Montreal's Molson Bank, President of the City Passenger Railway Company, and Director of the Montreal Gas Company and the Montreal Turnpike Trust. The author explains that in 1842 Crawford bought the fief of Verdun where he built the Victorian-style mansion called "Verdun House" and used Maison Nivard-de-Saint-Dizier, built in 1710, as a hunting lodge. He also joined the Montreal Fox Hounds (after 1880 known as the Montreal Hunt Club), a club that had been in existence since 1826. He participated in the club until 1901, which often used the fife of Verdun for its hunts. Crawford also served as a municipal councillor for Verdun from 1894 to 1901.
