Abstract |
A chronological trek through Yiddish culture, from Europe to North America. The author charts the history of Yiddish theatre in Montreal from 1892, with the arrival of Eastern European Jewish immigrants to the city. By the summer of 1913, the author points out, there were three professional Yiddish troupes in Montreal, each providing six to eight performances per week for a thirty-five to forty week season on half-a-dozen stages. However, by the 1960s, Yiddish professional theatre in Montreal was in decline. Amateur Yiddish theatre, under the guidance of Dora Wasserman (1919-2003), survived.
