Abstract
Alessandro Gavazzi (1809-1889) was a nineteenth-century Italian former priest who turned anti-Roman Catholic. Following a violent secratian riot between Irish Catholics and Protestants in Quebec City on June 7, 1853, Gavazzi moved on to Montreal where he gave a talk denouncing Pope Pius IX. At this riot, the military opened fire on the rioters, with deadly results.
