Title
Ideology in the Discourse of Montreal-Based Private Language Schools' Websites
Abstract
The author analyzes the websites of two Montreal-based English-as-a-second-language (ESL) private schools to determine how these businesses use discursive and visual resources to advance their for-profit interests. Specifically, the author examines how both schools manage the tension between their claims for educational legitimacy and their business concerns. He concludes that the schools further their ideology by positioning and legitimating themselves as educational institutions, and commercializing non-educational services (e.g. sightseeing tours) by promoting these undertakings as having ESL developmental value.
