Educational Influences in the Development of English-Speaking Culture in Post-Conquest Quebec, 1760-1800

Abstract |
The author examines the survival of the English-speaking culture in Quebec in the first forty years of British rule in a land that hitherto had been the exclusive home of French-speaking culture. The author concludes that the reason for the survival of the English language in this alien atmosphere was due to the educational influences of the English-speaking family, the Protestant church and clergy, English language private schools, newspapers, the legal system and the apprentice system.
