Abstract |
The biography of the superintendent of the quarantine station at Grosse Isle from 1836 to 1864. Douglas was in charge of the station when the famine Irish arrived in the late 1840s, bringing with them the typhus epidemic. As many as five thousand Irish immigrants died from the fever and are buried on the tiny island, downriver from Quebec City. Thousands more died as they continued up the St. Lawrence to Montreal and beyond.
