Abstract |
The author outlines the social and economic position of the Irish population of Montreal between 1867 and 1896. She argues that in 1867 the Irish occupied a modest but secure place in the economic life of the city. By the last decade of the nineteenth century, she maintains, the Irish had improved their position and were participating widely both as employer and employee in commerce, industry and the professions, although labouring continued to provide a livelihood for many. The Irish expanded in exact proportion to the growth of the whole population of Montreal, and many migrated to the city from rural Quebec. As they increased in number, they established the institutions, churches and societies, both Catholic and Protestant, essential for their progress. Interest in the affairs of Ireland and in Irish culture continued, the author maintains, but by 1896 the Montreal Irish were sufficiently integrated into English Quebec society to be Canadian rather than Irish in outlook.
