Eggheads' and Espionage: The Gouzenko Affair in Canada
|
Abstract |
Igor Gouzenko was a code clerk in the Soviet Union Embassy in Ottawa when he defected in 1945 with documents revealing Russian espionage activities in Canada. A Royal Commission was held in 1946 into the passing of secrets to the Soviets by Canadian public officials, academics and others in positions of trust. The author includes information on the reaction within McGill University to the Gouzenko Affair. Six of those arrested by the RCMP on espionage charges were McGill University science graduates, although only one was employed by the school.
