Abstract
The Quebec City-born and Montreal raised George Longmore (1793-1867), a British Army officer stationed at the Montreal Garrison between 1819 and 1824, was the author of "The Charivari; or Canadian Poetics: A Tale, After the Manner of Beppo" (1824). It was published under the nom-de-plume "Launcelot Longstaff". Longmore was one of the earliest Canadian-born poets to publish in English Canada. The editor outlines the history of the poem, the career of Longmore, and the inspiration for the poem in a notorious charivari that raged in Montreal in late May and early June, 1823, for one or two weeks and culminated in the destruction of a house and the death of an innocent bystander.
