Abstract
The exterior of the first St. Patrick's church in Douglastown was finished in 1855, and the interior in 1857. On July 13th, 1858, the church burned to the ground, and another church was built by November 1859. In 1860, Bishop Baillargeon erected (legally created) the parish of "St. Patrick's of Douglastown". In 1958, a new church was built to replace the century-old structure. The author outlines the history of the Irish Catholic parish on the Gaspé coast. In 1847 a ship named the "Carricks" carrying refugees from the Irish famine was wrecked in a storm off Cap-des-Rosiers. The thirty survivors of the 230 passengers became the nucleus of Douglastown's St. Patrick's Parish.
