Abstract |
Studying national and political societies in Montreal such as the Saint Patrick Society, the Irish Protestant Benevolent Society and the Orange Order, the author demonstrates how the identity of the Irish Protestant community in the city, whose focus was both Irish and British, was forged from relationships with other cultural groups in Montreal. Central to the development of the Irish Protestant communal identity separate from that of Irish Catholics was their separation from the Saint Patrick Society in 1856 to form their own national society – the Irish Protestant Benevolent Society – which led to the expansion of common interests based on Protestantism.
