Abstract
The history of the formation of a First World War Montreal regiment, the 199th (Duchess of Connaught's Own Irish Rangers) Battalion, CEF. The battalion was founded by the Canadian government to improve its recruitment success among Irish Canadians by having an all-Irish regiment. After sailing to England in December 1916, the battalion went on a tour of Ireland to improve recruitment in that country. On its return to England, the battalion was disbanded and absorbed into the 23rd Reserve Battalion, CEF on May 11, 1917. Ironically, the Irish-Canadian Rangers’ motto was "Qui Separabit?" (Who Shall Separate Us?).
