Abstract |
Montreal’s Lachine Canal from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century was Canada’s major industrial manufacturing centre. Between 1846 and 1945 there were between 600 and 800 different companies along its shores. These industries attracted large numbers of British and Irish immigrants to Montreal, as well as French-Canadians from rural parts of the province.
