Abstract |
A history of Montreal's Irish working-class roots, and the attachment to the Ship Fever Monument, also known as the Black Rock, which is located at the Montreal entrance to the Victoria Bridge. The monument was erected in 1859 as a burial marker for the six thousand Irish immigrants who died in the fever sheds erected by the city in the 1840s to house those immigrants escaping Ireland's Great Hunger and who contracted typhus on the coffin ships bring them to Canada. The author outlines the history of the monument and the on-going attempts to preserve it.
