Title |
Before the Fenians: 1848 and the Irish Plot to Invade Canada
|
Abstract |
The author recounts the conspiracy by Irish nationalist émigrés in the United States and Lower Canada to undertake an invasion or create an insurrection in Lower Canada in 1848. The point of the plot was to create a diversion from Ireland by distracting the attention of the British government and dividing its forces, thus allowing republician nationalists in Ireland to rise up against British control of their country.
