Abstract |
The Irish-born Charles McKiernan (1835-1889), better known as Joe Beef, was an ex-British Army quartermaster who in 1868 opened "Joe Beef's Canteen" in Montreal, first on rue Saint-Claude, opposite Bonsecours Market, and, in 1875, at the corner of rue de la Commune and rue Callières. The canteen was renowned for its charity to the destitute, and McKiernan always gave food and lodging to the down-and-out. His "inn" was on rue de la Commune, where more than 100 iron or wooden bunks were set up dormitory style.
