Title
Le voyage de Mme Davenport : quatorze jours d'enfer sur le chemin du Lac-Saint-Jean, 1871
Abstract
In August 1871, Mrs. Malcolm Davenport, a young English aristocrat newly arrived in Quebec, sets off on a horseback ride to Lac-Saint-Jean with her husband, two coachmen and a native guide. What should have been a pleasant journey soon turned into fourteen days of misery. Unprepared for this insane adventure, the group had no idea what awaited them on the barely marked route. But the rugged terrain, swamps, mosquitoes, fatigue and hunger were not enough to overcome Mrs. Davenport's courage and determination. The author offers a translation of the journal written by the traveller as she made her discoveries and encountered the unexpected. The author also reveals the little-known story of the first attempts to build a road between Quebec City and Lac-Saint-Jean through the formidable mountains of the Laurentides wildlife reserve. (Translated publisher's description of the book.)
