Origin of Congenital Heart Disease: Reflections on Maude Abbott's Work
|
Abstract |
An analysis of the work of McGill University pathologist Dr.Maude Abbott (1869-1940) illustrates her remarkable perception of a kaleidoscope of cardiac risk factors which the author claims are now gaining acceptance. Abbott's letters to Luther Emmett Holt (1855-1924), an American pediatrician and author, expressed her belief that prenatal infections cause cardiac maldevelopment, but she also raised relevant questions on the potential role of genetic inheritance in relation to cardiac disease.
