| Abstract |
The biography of Palmer Cox (1840-1924), born in the hamlet of South Ridge, south of Granby in Quebec's Eastern Townships. As a young man, he emigrated to the United States where he made his career and fortune as a writer and illustrator of children's literature, especially a series called The Brownie Books. Cox maintained his contact with Granby, and in 1904 he designed and built Brownie Castle, a seventeen-room home on Elgin Street in the city. He is buried in St. George's Cemetery in Granby. A plaque was placed on his tomb by young fans from New York that reads: " PALMER COX (1840-1924) IN CREATING THE BROWNIES, HE BESTOWED A PRICELESS HERITAGE ON CHILDHOOD."
