La peinture et la question du régionalisme dans l'Entre-deux-guerres
|
Abstract |
Led by a small group of critics and "modern" artists, the reaction against regionalism in art appeared in Quebec as early as 1918. The author presents the positions of Anglophone and Francophone critics on the question of regionalism. She explains that during the 1920s, a redefinition of regionalism was sought in order to open up Canadian and Quebec artistic expression to include certain formal innovations. However, during the 1930s a polarization of the debate on regionalism occurred which resulted in an increasingly conservative regionalist discourse that defended traditional paintings of the land and the national territory.
