|
Abstract |
The Nova Scotia-born Killam (1885-1955), considered Canada's richest man when he died, spent most of his adult life in Montreal. Killam took over the investment firm Royal Securities and through this firm acquired large stakes in such companies as Abitibi Price, International Power, and Montreal Engineering. In 1922 he married Dorothy Brooks Johnston. After his death, the federal government, at Killam's request, took half his $83 million estate to help establish the Canada Council. Money from the Killam estate also went to establish the Montreal Neurological Institute as well as an endowment to McGill University.
