Abstract |
The Scottish-born John Neilson (1776-1848) was a Quebec City printer, newspaper publisher, bookstore owner, politician and militia officer. His bookstore was considered the most important in both Lower and Upper Canada. The authors studied the books sold by Neilson based on five catalogues published in 1802, 1803, 1811, 1817 and 1818, as well as on the Neilson papers held by the Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa.
