A City With a Difference: The Rise and Fall of the Montreal Citizen’s Movement
|
| Abstract |
The Montreal Citizen’s Movement, a municipal political party founded in May 1974, was a broad coalition that included members of major trade unions, Parti Québécois militants, the Quebec wing of the federal New Democratic Party, independent radicals, and a surprisingly significant number of Anglophone intellectuals. The author describes how electoral pragmatists co-existed with ideological-driven social activists during the party’s twelve years in opposition (1974-1986) and its two terms in power (ending in 1995).
