Abstract |
St. Anne's Church, opened in 1854 at the corner of Basin and McCord (now de la Montagne) streets in the Montreal district of Griffintown, was the second Irish Catholic parish in the city. By 1994, it served between 1,300 and 1,600 Irish families. From the middle of the twentieth century, the southwest of Montreal experienced a process of deindustrialization which intensified in the 1960s. The second and third generation Irish left Griffintown to merge into more middle-class areas of the city. In 1970, the area was abandoned and St. Anne's Church was demolished. All that remains are the church's foundation stones that outline the spot where the building once stood.
