Abstract |
A detailed account of the "stoppage" of the Consolidated Bank of Canada due to the economic depression of the 1870s. The Consolidated was the result of the 1876 amalgamation of the City Bank of Montreal and the Royal Canadian Bank of Toronto. The Consolidated Bank collapsed in 1880 and was liquidated in 1882. The author includes a brief history of the City Bank of Montreal, formed in 1831 and the first bank to be successful in breaking the monopoly of the Bank of Montreal in the city. The original shareholders in the City Bank were John Molson, John Frothingham, William Ritchie, François-Antoine Larocque, Thomas A. Begley, Joseph Vallée, John Easton Mills, Stanley Bagg, and William Lyman.
