Saving the Little Ones : The Heroism of Sarah Maxwell
Abstract
Sarah Maxwell was the head teacher of Hochelaga School in Montreal’s east end in the early 1900s. On 26 February 1907 a fire broke out in the school and quickly spread, forcing an evacuation. Realizing that the kindergarten class was trapped in the school's attic, she rushed to the top floor and rescued more than thirty children, but she and sixteen young ones perished in the fire.
