Lost Corners: Where in the World is Hancock Hill
|
| Abstract |
The author points out that Hancock Hill in Quebec’s Eastern townships was never a thriving centre. Today, all that remains of Hancock Hill, located on Chemin Benoît within the village of St. Armand, are a nineteenth-century home and barn and 58 gravestones left standing in the Russell Cemetery. The first landowners on Hancock Hill were Jabez Vaughan (1766-1860), a native of Beekman, New York, and Patience Rogers (1772-1816) of Hancock, Massachusetts. Their home was called Hancock Hill in tribute to Patience’s Massachusetts home. She was the first person buried in what became Russell Cemetery following her death in 1816. Two other gravestones in the cemetery are of interest for being recognized by the American Legion – “General” James Morse (1797-1877) and Erastus Cheney (1819-1914).
