Abstract |
The Scottish-born Neil McLaren (1766-1844) entered the service of the Montreal-based North West Company around 1795. In July 1799 he was working as a clerk in the Tadoussac trading-post, at the mouth of the Saguenay River. In April 1800 McLaren was sent 144 kilometres up the Saguenay to Chicoutimi. From there, he ran this large North West Company factory until October 1805. He left the Company in 1805, and moved to Port-au-Persil, and in 1806 or 1807 he married Margaret Hewit, daughter of John Hewit, the manager of the seigneury of Murray Bay. They had four sons and five daughters. McLaren ran a fishing business while cultivating his farm in Port-au-Persil. He died in 1844, His eldest son, John McLaren, helped develop the northern part of Charlevoix.
