Abstract
The American-born Horatio Nelson (no relation to the famous British Admiral of the same name) arrived in Montreal in 1841 where he became a successful fancy goods merchant and municipal politician. The author outlines Nelson’s drive as a municipal councillor and the city’s chief negotiator for the public acquisition of land on the summit of Mount Royal to establish a “Park for the People.” Nelson was successful in 1874 in convincing Frederick Law Olmsted, the New York-based world’s leading landscape architect, to draw-up plans for the park, but the two butted heads over its design, especially access roads to the summit. Although Olmsted is credited with designing Mount Royal Park, the author points out that the New York landscape architect’s plan bears only a passing resemblance to the park we know today, thanks to Horatio Nelson.
