| Abstract |
The authors note that linguistic practices within the family environment can influence the choice of schooling language for children. Using a 2021 Statistics Canada survey of the vitality of official language minorities, they examined the impact of parents' linguistic characteristics on the language of schooling for children. They found that in Quebec, among children aged 5 to 18 eligible for instruction in the minority official language (English), more than half (58.7%) had no parent whose mother tongue was English. Among these, 44.1% had at least one parent who had been educated in English, while 55.9% had no parent who had been educated in English. Among children with at least one English-speaking parent (41.3%), a larger proportion (85.8%) had at least one parent who had been educated in English, compared to 14.2% who did not.
