Abstract
The author discusses the history of the Bank of Montreal and the bank's influence on Canada's financial and economic history. The author examines how the Bank of Montreal was the first to introduce paper banknotes in Canada in 1817, and how it changed the country's financial system. Particular attention is given to Edwin Henry King (1828-1896), the Bank of Montreal's general manager (1863–69) and president (1869–73) and his contributions to the business aspects of banking in Canada.
