Talbot Mercer Papineau (1883-1917), a Montreal French Canadian by birth and an English-speaking Protestant by upbringing and education and the grandson of Patriote leader Louis-Joseph Papineau, wrote to his cousin Henri Bourassa (1868-1952) in 1916, a prominent spokesperson for the anti-war Nationalist movement, outlining his support for Canada's participation in the First World War. Bourassa replied, outlining his opposition to conscription and Canada's participation in a war of Imperialism. Papineau died the following year at the Battle of Passendale, Belgium.
