Nina May (Pickel) Owens, 1869–1959 : English Quebec’s Early “Independent” Woman/Artist
Abstract
Nina May (Pickel) Owens (1869-1959), one of Canada’s earliest women artists, was born in Bolton Centre, in Quebec's Eastern Townships, on June 16, 1869. The author points out that though few may have heard her name and seen her work, the artist's life and experiences as both a woman in the domestic sphere and as an artist provide a wealth of knowledge about women and women artists of her time. The author found that Nina Owens is of particular importance because her life and experiences are independent of what is commonly known and believed about women and women artists of late-Victorian and early-twentieth century Canada. The author argues that Nina Owens employed both her domestic and artistic identities without regret, consequently challenging conventional notions of femininity and the exclusivity of professionalism.
