Creating a 'Northern Minerva': John William Dawson and the Royal Society of Canada
|
Abstract |
From 1855 to 1893, John William Dawson (1820-1899) was Professor of geology and Principal of McGill University. He was the first President of the Royal Society of Canada which he helped co-found with the Marquis of Lorne, Canada's Governor General, in 1882. Using Dawson's science-related correspondence, the authors examine the motivations behind the Royal Society's creation.
