Abstract |
Jori Smith (1907-2005), William Goodridge Roberts (1904-1974), John Lyman (1886-1967) and Maurice Gagnon all had a longstanding interest in the role of the unconscious in the creative process. According to the author, they were among the first on the Montreal art scene to recognize the importance of psychoanalytic theory and attempted to incorporate its concepts into both their thinking and their practice.
