The Changes in the Industrial Occupations of Women in the Environment of Montreal During the War Period, 1914-1918
|
Abstract |
The author received a scholarship from the Canadian Reconstruction Association in 1918 to investigate the economic and workplace changes brought about by the First World War to women in Montreal. She investigated such industries and occupations as munition plants, railway shops, factories, wholesale houses, department stores, banks, and civil and municipal services. The author's investigation included how many men and women relatively were employed before 1914 and what was the change, if any, during the war; what was the comparative remuneration received by men and women workers before the war, and what was it by 1918; where were these war-time women employees drawn from - domestic life, domestic service, school teaching, or other industrial employment; how many of these women were French-Canadians; and what was the proportion of married women workers in Montreal.
