Abstract |
A translation of Thomas Pye's book, Canadian Scenery : District of Gaspé, originally published in 1866. The New Brunswick-born Pye (1840-1877) was a photographer and illustrator who spent two years travelling and photographing the Gaspé, northern New Brunswick and the Magdalen Islands. In his book, the artist presents a series of twenty engravings based on his photographs of Gaspé. Many of the engravings in the book capture the Anglophone businesses of nineteenth-century Gaspé. Pye hoped the book would help persuade the Intercontinental Railroad to extend its line into the Gaspé region. Thomas Pye settled in New Carlisle where he died, possibly in a house fire, in 1877.
