L'histoire de la médecine et des soins de santé rappelée dans la toponymie de la ville de Sherbrooke

Abstract |
Sherbrooke has had a rich history of medicine and health care, for the city has had resident doctors since at least the 1830s and a hospital since 1875. The authors point out that this long history is reflected in the city’s place names: approximately 120 provincial and municipal names (both official and unofficial) of places and institutions relate to medicine and health care, enshrining the memory of doctors, nurses, an orderly, midwives, benefactors, influential persons, buildings, institutions, and organizations. Of these, half are street names; a third are names of buildings, groups of buildings, or wings of buildings; five are names of parks; and three are designations for natural features. Some 15 other such names remain in the city’s pool of place names; and many other persons or institutions remain to be commemorated.
