Abstract |
A social history of the decline of Montreal's wealthy English-speaking families who, during their apex at the turn of the twentieth century, controlled up to two-thirds of the wealth of Canada. The author estimates that there were between fifty and one-hundred and fifty families among this predominately Scottish elite group, most of whom lived in Montreal's Golden Square Mile district. The author interviewed the descendants of these families and analyzes why they began to lose their wealth and national economic and political power following the 1920s.
