Title
Montréal et les débuts de la navigation à vapeur sur le Saint-Laurent
Abstract
The first steamship on the Saint Lawrence was the Accommodation, built for John Molson (1763-1836), which made her maiden voyage in November 1809, sailing from Montreal to Quebec in sixty-six hours, thirty of which were spent at anchor at the foot of Lac Saint-Pierre awaiting a favourable tide. By 1816 steamboats were going from Montreal to Quebec in twenty-four hours, and making the return trip in thirty six, and not long after daily service was regular and dependable. The author outlines the development of transportation on the St. Lawrence near and around Montreal, including the building of canals.
