Abstract |
In 1766, the Jersey Island-born Charles Robin (1743-1824) established a fishery at Paspébiac on the Baie des Chaleurs shore of the Gaspé Peninsula. For the next 120 years, the Robin family dominated the cod fishery and the economy in this part of the Gaspé region. During the period 1815-1850, when the seasonal fishery was in full expansion, fishing communities on the Baie des Chaleurs faced recurring winter hunger. The author argues that the credit and rationing policy that the Robins instituted during subsistence crises in the first half of the nineteenth century consolidated the dependency of the communities.
