Le peuplement permanent de la Basse-Côte-Nord du Saint-Laurent : 1820-1900

Abstract |
The author traces the history of the settlement of the communities along the Lower North Shore of the St. Lawrence (or "Quebec Labrador") from 1820 to 1900 from Kégashka to Blanc-Sablon. He divides the settlement of this region into three time periods: 1820 to 1840 (the coming of the pioneers); 1840 to 1860 (the arrival of French Canadians); and 1860 to 1900 (the settlements of the Newfoundlanders). The author outlines the exact or approximate dates of the establishment of fishing stations, and the names of the settlers who founded the villages and their places of origin. Where possible, he also reconstructs the evolution of these first populations, their internal and external migrations, as well as their types of economic activities and their living conditions.
