Abstract |
A study of the intricate co-partnerships which comprised the North West Company. The Montreal-based North West Company was officially created in 1783 in opposition to other Montreal fur trading interests and to the London-based Hudson Bay Company. The author emphasizes the relationships among the company's principal partners: Simon McTavish (c. 1750-1804), William McGillivray (1764-1825), Alexander Mackenzie (1764-1820), David Thompson (1770-1857), and Simon Fraser (1776-1862). The company merged with the Hudson Bay Company in 1821.
